Background of the Study

Television programs are a powerful medium for disseminating cultural knowledge, especially among young audiences. In Uhunmwonde, TV content plays a crucial role in shaping children’s understanding of local culture and traditions (Ighodalo, 2023). Cultural narratives, folklore, and traditional practices presented on television can serve as an informal educational tool, supplementing the formal school curriculum (Omoregie, 2024). However, with the increasing presence of globalized content, there is concern that indigenous cultural elements may be overshadowed by modern influences (Agbonifo, 2025). This study investigates the extent to which television programs impact children’s cultural understanding, analyzing the balance between traditional content and global media influences, as well as the mediating role of parental and educational reinforcement (Ighodalo, 2023).

Statement of the Problem

Although television serves as an important source of cultural education for children in Uhunmwonde, there is growing concern that globalized media content is diluting indigenous cultural narratives. This imbalance may result in a weakened understanding of local traditions and values among young viewers (Omoregie, 2024). The study aims to identify the effects of varied television programming on children’s grasp of local culture and to determine gaps between cultural representation on TV and traditional practices (Agbonifo, 2025).

Objectives of the Study:

1. To assess the role of television in conveying local cultural values.

2. To analyze the balance between indigenous and globalized content on TV.

3. To propose strategies for enhancing the representation of local culture in television programming.

Research Questions:

1. How do television programs influence children’s understanding of local culture?

2. What is the proportion of indigenous versus globalized content in these programs?

3. What measures can be adopted to improve cultural representation on television?

Research Hypotheses:

1. Television programs significantly affect children’s cultural perceptions.

2. Predominant global content reduces the emphasis on local traditions.

3. Increased local cultural programming enhances cultural understanding.

Significance of the Study

This study is significant as it highlights television’s role in cultural education and the challenges posed by globalized media. Its findings will assist media producers, educators, and policymakers in creating strategies that reinforce local cultural identity and improve cultural transmission among children (Ighodalo, 2023).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:

This study is limited to assessing the influence of television programs on children’s understanding of local culture in Uhunmwonde Local Government Area, focusing on media content and its cultural implications.

Definitions of Terms:

1. Television Programs: Broadcast content delivered via television.

2. Local Culture: Indigenous traditions, customs, and practices.

3. Globalized Content: Media content influenced by international or Western cultures.
